$5.5M Settlement For School Principal Who Died When He Donated Bone Marrow

When Westfield High School Principal Derrick Nelson died during bone marrow surgery, it was national news. He was donating his bone marrow to a 14-year-old teenager in France he never even met.

The lawsuit brought by attorney David A. Mazie alleged that medical malpractice was committed by the anesthesiologist during surgery by failing to monitor oxygen saturation which led to Nelson suffering brain damage. His death came several weeks later, after going into a coma.

This is a very substantial settlement considering that Derrick Nelson did not experience any conscious pain and suffering, and although engaged, he was not married at the time of his death. Because he was not married, damages were only available for his elderly parents and his one child.
